Developing a Summer Intensive Course at a Commuter Campus

In an attempt to rebuild our severely reduced summer program, our Spanish faculty has created an intensive course, tailored especially to meet the needs of urban university students. The course has proven to be highly successful. Our summer enrollments have more than doubled and the students' accomplishments have been equal to or, in many cases, superior to those achieved by students in the normal two‐year sequence of courses. The article discusses specifically how this course evolved, what materials were used, and how the course, which satisfies the two‐year language requirement, differs from the regular courses. The advantages and disadvantages of the course are focused upon from the students' point of view as well as that of the teachers.
