ABSTRACT If you are translating from your native language into a second language, the importance of being sure that you do not take on a task beyond your linguistic reach cannot be overemphasized. Do not assume that because you are working with your dictionary, the danger of serious error is removed. Mistakes in translations of comments and advertisements, some of which have found their way on to billboards all over the world, are legendary in the profession and need not be repeated to make the point. Cultural nuances are the most difficult facets of any language to master, and a slight variation in tone or color of wording can bring disaster. Be careful!
