One of the most challenging aspects of foreign language teaching at any level is providing rewarding and stimulating instructional units to highly motivated students. This is particularly important at the high school level where initial interest in foreign languages often begins. This unit is designed to present a French fabliau to intermediate French students. After a brief introduction to the historical period and a discussion of the genre (fabliau), the student is presented with a French fabliau (De Brunain et de Blérain). After reading and discussing the fabliau students will find a series of evaluation activities designed to encourage them to write and present a contemporary fabliau. This unit reinforces the four language skills and introduces students to the culture of medieval France.
