This article presents a theoretical base for combining humanistic and cultural study, and offers ideas for implementation. Emphasis is placed initially on discovering similarities and common points of reference. Building empathy for another culture begins with sharing perceptions and acquiring a foundation of likenesses before dealing with contrasts and differences. A sampling of classroom tested activities illustrates the positive approach suggested.
