A step‐by‐step method for the verbal analysis of still photographs in foreign language classes is explained in this article. The extensive analysis of an appropriate photograph and the carefully controlled syntactic manipulation of the material suggested by the picture lead to the improvement of the student's writing, speaking, listening, and even reading abilities. The photograph serves as a vehicle for the introduction of selected thinking skills (such as the differentiation of fact, inference, and fantasy) and impart a heightened awareness of the cultural aspects of the scene depicted as well as of the learner's own environment.
