The author describes how all irregularities of all common verbs in French can be reduced to five types in the passé simple: (1) Irregular stems and endings; (2) Regular stems, irregular endings; (3) Irregular stems, regular endings; (4) Stem from third person plural, regular endings; and (5) Stem from the past participle, regular endings: common irregular verbs whose past participles end in “u” and those whose past participles are identical to the first person singular of the passé simple. The system facilitates learning the tense with no need to memorize each irregular verb individually.
