This article discusses techniques whereby the abstract nature of foreign language poetry may be communicated to students. Some procedures are: (1) an introduction to the literary genre of poetry; (2) understanding and appreciating poetry as a literary skill (including grammar and syntax); (3) the poet in his or her milieu; (4) reading the poem for expression and vocabulary; (5) determining the poem's place in a literary movement; and (6) analyzing the poem for theme, content, and structure. Stylistics are an integral part of the poetic form, and as such present students with an excellent medium for the study of language.
