Your Foreign Language Program: Telling It—and Showing It—Like It Is *

Foreign language teachers have long faced the problem of an elitist image, a problem which has grown even more acute in recent years due to many colleges dropping their language requirement for admission. In a project carried out in Parchment (Michigan) High School, a sound and slide program was produced to show the community foreign language learning in their own school system. The presentation delineates: (1) how foreign language study implements each of the stated goals of the school's philosophy of education, (2) what constitutes the classroom learning experiences of foreign language students, and (3) what values the students believe are inherent in foreign language study. This approach attempts not only to portray the nature and goals of the local foreign language program accurately, but also to increase support for and enrollment in that program.
