A major purpose of education is to develop thinking, sensitive students. In language programs an additional priority is to develop cross‐cultural understanding. Learning is derived through various sources, not only the written word. This article discusses the inquiry teaching or discovery approach to learning. An object lesson is outlined using a cultural artifact as the subject of analysis; questions the students might ask about the object are included.
