It is clear that the discussion included in these two issues of FLA leaves untouched an equally wide range of assessment issues, including classroom testing of basic instruction, practical and day‐to‐day evaluation of student learning, reporting systems, and other measures of teacher proficiency. It is hoped, however, that through this thematic issue, open communication about the concerns may be initiated. Finally, we ask that readers respond to this theme through letters to the editor and through reports of their own research in this area.
