Much of the current emphasis on communication techniques has been reserved for oral work in the language, although many researchers and practitioners in second language instruction are faced with the concern of reading acquisition along with the acquisition of the spoken language. This paper relates work on oral communication to reading. For this purpose, communication is defined in the information theory sense of ‘shared information.’ The activity described activates the reading process by obliging students to use written information which is of immediate importance to their task. The technique involves presenting each student with a written clue from a mystery story which is pertinent to the solution of the mystery. Sustained student interaction is required in that the problem cannot be solved without the participation and cooperation of all class members. This joint problem‐solving endeavor requires students to use both oral and written linguistic skills.
