‘Literature in Action,’ as a method of making the study of foreign literatures more attractive and vital to college undergraduates, is illustrated in the description of a course involving the production of a play in French. Through the experience, students not only come to know and appreciate a work of literature in depth, but also develop attitudes, knowledge, and skills which are highly desirable in the study of French language and literature. The course, entitled French Theater Workshop, offers teaching techniques which are useful in revitalizing foreign language departments with declining enrollments. It proves to have an immediate and growing appeal to language majors as well as to students specializing in other disciplines.
