The topic of individualized instructions is equally as popular in the 1970's as was audiolingualism in the 1960's. One decided difference, however, is that a much more flexible and less prescriptive atmosphere prevails in this than in the last; hence, we are likely to see many variations of individualized instruction, such the one described here. The thesis of this paper is that many students are not prepared to cope with the flexibility a totally self‐pacing individualized instruction program offers. A multiple‐track plan is described which does not restrict the learner who is able to proceed at an accelerated pace, and which simultaneously offers a considerable amount of flexibility to other students. Both short‐term and long‐term goals enhance systematic progress and prevent needless procrastination.
