Students enter a community college with widely varying backgrounds, aptitudes, motivations, and learning styles. A self‐paced individualized instructional system at Tarrant County Junior College makes it possible for students to succeed in foreign language courses. Learning activities include optional large‐group and small‐group meetings, conferences with peer tutors, and utilization of a variety of mediated resources, such as cassette tapes, slides, and videotapes. Students demonstrate mastery of the objectives of the modules in sequence, each progressing at his own pace and according to his own learning style. Use of the system has resulted in significant increases in the skills of speaking, reading, and writing and in composite language skill.
