The mere utilization of the videotape will not assure free‐flowing conversation. Before taping, attentive selection of material and careful preparation are essential. In this experiment all sessions taped were a follow‐up to students working with a unit on a French village. Students read interviews, prepared language and cultural exercises, and saw slides and films before attempting role‐playing in front of the camera. The conscious effort required by the experiment created a new feeling of intimacy between students and teachers. The opportunity for self‐analysis was found highly beneficial. Students felt that they had reinforced their language skills and their cultural awareness while learning how to pay more attention to each other as well.
