It has been claimed that generative phonology will effect major changes in the pronunciation sections of foreign language textbooks. However, being highly mentalistic, complex, antibehavioristic, computer‐like, and abstract, generative phonology can be practically applied to teaching second language pronunciation in only a very limited way.
