Because of a lack of historical information on Black artisans in the building trades and decorative arts, this paper was designed to stimulate research in the area of Black craftsmanship. Past and current research efforts, methodologies, and sources available for analysis are presented. Focus is given to two categories of historical evidence—verbal (oral and written) and artifacts. Research of this type is deemed essential to our understanding of the Black contribution to American artistic evolution.
