This study was initiated to seek information concerning 1) homeowners' involvement in the initiation and design of their earth sheltered home and, 2) earth sheltered homeowners' levels of satisfaction with their homes. In‐person interviews with 22 earth sheltered homeowners was done in Southern Illinois. Interview questions were designed for maximum freedom of response by owners. The answers indicated homeowners' levels of satisfaction and provided insight into issues surrounding earth sheltered living. It appears that the more professional assistance used in design and construction the fewer the problems encountered, and overall level of acceptance with earth sheltered living remained high regardless of the problems. Personal accomplishment, pride of ownership, or the inability of homeowners to distinguish between the concept of earth sheltered housing, and satisfaction with their specific living conditions could not be ruled out as probable influences on the overall high level of acceptance of earth sheltered living.
