Summary The effect of sample preparation on the amount of basophilic stippling of erythro‐cytes (BSE) was studied using blood from a calf with chronic experimental lead poisoning. The combination of EDTA anticoagulation and rapid drying of the blood smear resulted in the most BSE. Alcohol prefixation reduced BSE. Wright‐Leishman stain was better than Wright stain in demonstrating BSE.
