In the February issue of MAQ (16(2):36–40), Corinne Hodgson's original article, “Using and Misusing Ethnographic Data: Lactation as ‘Nature's Contraceptive,”’ appeared. In the article, she strongly criticized Dr. R. V. Short for his article, “Breast Feeding,” which was published in Scientific American (250:35–41, 1984). Dr. Short was asked to provide a commentary, but declined, suggesting instead several other experts in the field, who were contacted for their opinions. Dr. John Bongaarts of the Population Council submitted commentary that was published in the February MAQ, but three other experts responded after the publication deadline for that issue. Their thoughts about the Hodgson article, and about the issue of breast‐feeding and fertility, appear below. These comments were submitted to Hodgson, whose response follows—Ed.
