Although the concept of ethnicity is generally understood by researchers, there is a great deal of variation with respect to its operational definition. Most studies of ethnicity use a single indicator measure to identify the various subgroups. This is particularly the case in studies on French‐English differences in Canada. This study demonstrates an ethnic classification procedure based on communication patterns of individuals in the Canadian context. Four groups of varying degrees of English‐French ethnicity were identified and their profiles examined. The four group taxonomy was then applied to see the moderating effect of ethnicity on leisure participation behavior. Résumé Bien que le concept d'ethnicité soit généralement compris des chercheurs, on trouve beaucoup de variations quant à sa définition opérationnelle. La plupart des études sur l'ethnicité utilisent un indicateur unique de mesure pour identifier les différents sous‐groupes. C'est le cas en particulier des études sur les différences entre les Canadiens anglais et français. Cette étude introduit une procédure de classification ethnique fondée sur les comportements de communication des Canadiens dans un milieu bilingue. Quatre sous‐groupes ayant des degrés différents d'ethnicité ont été identifieés et profilés. Cette taxonomie en quatre groupes a ensuite été appliquée avec succés à la participation aux activités de loisir.
