An Exploration of Commonly Shared Bases Behind Political Labelling

This study examined managers' interpretations of organizational politics, and asked why they perceive certain actions in the workplace to be political in nature. Short vignettes with two versions each were developed to test five proposed bases of political labelling. A sample of 224 Canadian managers rated “how political” the actions in the vignettes appeared. An action intended to hide something unfavourable was consistently viewed to be more political than that same action intended to deal with uncertainty or conflicting priorities. Abo, when an actor personally initiated a certain action, that action was viewed to be more political than when it was simply a reaction to the request of someone else. The findings contribute to an appreciation of the meaning of politics from the manager's point of view. Résumé Cette etude a examiné les interprétations adminis‐tratives des politiques dans l'entreprise, et a demandé pourquoi les gérants perçoivent certaines actions concernant le marché du travail comme étant de nature politique. Afin de vérifier cinq dimensions proposées à caractère politique, on a développé un test autour de courtes vignettes comportant deux versions chacunes. L'échantillon de 224 gérants canadiens a évalué si les actions dans les vignettes étaient à caractère politique. Lorsqu'une action avail pour but de cacher quelque chose de nature défavorable, on a constamment jugé cette action plus politique que lorsque cette měme action traitait d'incertitude ou depriorités en conflit. De plus, lorsqu'un acteur initiait personnellement une cenaine action, on a jugé cette action plus politique que lorsqu'il s'agissait simplement d'une réaction à la requěte de quelqu'un d'autre. Les résultats permettent de comprendre les politiques dans l'entreprise du point de vue des gérants.
