A Plea for Help The point of this paper is to simply frame and illuminate a novel hypothesis in the theory of mental content, a hypothesis which many will find outrageous. In presenting the hypothesis, I shall not mince words; I shall write as if it is true, so that the exposition goes more smoothly. My original hope was that after the outrageous hypothesis had been set out, orthodoxy would be vindicated, for it then would be clear just why the hypothesis must be rejected. Well, it may be clear why the hypothesis should be rejected, but I must confess that it is not clear to me. So this is a plea for help: Here follows a hypothesis, help me to see just why it couldn't be so!
