This paper summarizes information on X‐ray units currently in use by general dental practitioners in Australia: the type and number of machines; tube potential; timer type; length of cable between X‐ray unit and timer; type of cone; and frequency of inspection and servicing. Approximately 6 per cent of Australian dentists in general practice now have pantomograph units. Only 25 per cent of dentists have their X‐ray units serviced regularly, and inspection of X‐ray units by health authorities is very variable.
