The ‘characteristic curve’ for film response has been shown to be inadequate. A method is proposed to calibrate non‐screen radiographic film response based upon an equation descriptive of the actual irradiation process. The advantages include the total absence of arbitrary decisions and constants, simplicity of application and ready interpretation. In addition, a Contrast Index is derived. Representative results are given.
