Occlusal features of the upper first molars of Australian Aboriginals were measured in three‐dimensions with the aid of moiré contourography. The heights of the three principal molar cusps in this population were greater than in Japanese (Mongoloid) but less than in Dutch (Caucasoid) populations. Intercuspal distances were considerably greater than in the two other populations, a reflection of the larger mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters in the Aboriginals. The observed racial differences in occlusal surface features are discussed in relation to general craniofacial morphology, dental occlusion and the mechanics of jaw movements during mastication.
