Recently there has been an increasing demand placed upon the dental profession to address the problem of viral disease transmission. Viral diseases currently of increasing concern to the medical and dental profession are those caused by the herpes simplex and hepatitis B viruses and the virus responsible for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The importance of these infections to the profession, and the management of patients who may be infectious, are placed in perspective.
