The contributions of the Institute to dental science over the forty years since its establishment are discussed in the context of the objectives expressed by its first Director, Dr N. E. Goldsworthy. Evidence is presented of the role played by the scientific staff in meeting these objectives through the publication of research papers and obtaining research grants, which are now a major source of income.
