A bstract — The histological, histochemical and ultrastructural features of fibrous lesions of the oral mucosa containing large, stellate mononuclear and multinucleated cells are described. The cell are present in a spectrum of hyperplastic lesions. The surrounding matrix is distinctive and the cells show myofibroblastic differentiation. These changes are not sufficiently characteristic or unusual in normal or pathological tissues to warrant separation of these lesions as a distinct entity or to include them within groupings of more specialized lesions.
