A bstract — A definition of geriatric dentistry is presented in this paper. From this definition several specific groups of older persons such as the older adult, the frail elderly, and the functionally dependent elderly can be identified. Each group requires dental care and the dentist treating these patients requires knowledge and skills at different levels. Skills and training programmes for dentists wishing to treat geriatric patients are discussed.
