A bstract — Assessment of the records of 173 pyogenic dental infections revealed a predominance of facultative anaerobic streptococci and gram negative bacteria. It is possible that the type of bacteria isolated may reflect the micro‐aerophilic nature of the culturing procedures. The importance of anaerobic culturing methods is stressed. A broad spectrum penicillin (ampicillin) was the most effective antibiotic tested and erythromycin is an excellent alternative. Bacterial isolates showed some degree of resistance to co‐trimoxazole, penicillin G, methicillin and compound sulphonamide.
