A bstract — The difficulty of correctly assessing a patient's speech problems has been acknowledged for many years. The various types of speech tests such as spontaneous samples, imitative samples, samples by reading, and deep samples are discussed. The clinical application of speech tests in relation to dentistry is also outlined. A proposed speech articulation screening test for use in the dental surgery is suggested. The criteria to which the test was formulated are listed and an analysis of the test is provided. A protocol is required to use the test effectively in a standardized manner. It is recommended, for difficult cases, that a speech pathologist treat the patient in co‐operation with the dentist.
