A bstract — The kinetics involved in the free‐radical polymerization of self‐cure resin based restorative materials was investigated by infrared spectroscopy and rheological techniques. By the incorporation of various inhibitors and additional amounts of initiator and accelerator into commercial materials, the initial and final set times were altered allowing the development of a ‘snap‐set’ material. In particular, the nature of the inhibitor was found to have a critical influence on the polymerization.
