A bstract — Information on demographic and social characteristics, attitudes about smoking, and smoking habits were obtained from 205 women on the staff of Perth Dental Hospital and dental assistant trainees of the Perth Technical College. Rates of cigarette smoking were four times higher in central sterilizing supply department assistants (53.8 per cent) than in staff nurses (13.8 percent). Student nurses and dental assistants recorded rates of smoking similar to general nurses and the general population of similar age and sex.
