A bstract — International surveys disclose differences in levels of airborne mercury vapour and biological tests of staff. Present conditions in Australia do not justify concern but a potential risk must be recognized and regular testing of the dental area using personal monitoring badges and portable detectors is recommended. Periodical biological testing is advisable and well established principles of mercury hygiene must be followed.
