A bstract — Introduction of semesters and the imposition of quotas at the University of Queensland in 1974, has had profound effects on the numbers competing for admission, and the failure rate during the Dental Course has declined dramatically. More women now enter and generally speaking have better academic records than men in all years of the course. The source of their secondary education has no significant effect on academic performance and tests applied in this study did not reveal consistently significant correlations between preclinical and clinical subjects; the best predictor of success is entry with an excellent academic record from secondary school.
