A bstract — A conservative approach is presented designed to retain the maximum strength of the tooth in the preparation of cavities for amalgam restorations in permanent teeth. Three classifications of cavity design are presented embracing a three‐stage procedure which retains the maximum tooth structure especially in the gingival third of the crown in order to improve aesthetics and maintain function and the health of the gingiva.
