SUMMARY A 46‐year‐old female patient undergoing hemiglossectomy with supraomohyoid neck dissection under general anesthesia suffered acute bronchospasm which was successfully treated with subcutaneous terbutaline. The only other noticeable adverse event during induction of anesthesia was the development of periorbital skin erythema encircling the Opticlude ® orthoptic eye patches within a few minutes of application. The eye patches were immediately removed. Eight weeks later, negative intradermal skin testing to Haemaccel ® implicated anaphylactoid reaction instead of anaphylaxis. This case report illustrates the importance of routine history taking of known allergies and dermatological conditions that can require caution in the use of allergen drugs and associated agents such as Haemaccel ® and Opticlude ® orthoptic eye patches.
