“When I came to you brethren I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words of wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (I Cor. 2:1–2). “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34). “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Col. 1:24; Rom. 8:16–17).
