When the World Council of Churches was organized in 1948, one of the tasks that member churches asked the new organization to undertake was that of coordination of interchurch aid and sharing. Even though only a small percentage of all interchurch and development aid passes through the WCC, the Council has been one of the most visible expressions of the shared life of the churches. Through these years, the growing understanding of the biblical concept of sharing and the increasing involvement on the part of the whole Christian community has been a challenge to the Council to continue its search for the most appropriate means of enabling ecumenical sharing. The new approach to ecumenical sharing of resources discussed in the following interview with Huibert van Beek, secretary for Ecumenical Sharing of Resources (ESR), is another step in that direction.
