This is the most ancient ecumenical creed of the New Testament Church. It is called the Apostles’ Creed not because it was written by the apostles. Rather, it is so-called because of its antiquity and its reflection of the main points which the apostles would have emphasised judging from the Gospel accounts. Indeed, it is very possible that some of the statements in its earliest form could have been enumerated by the apostles and their successors as they catechised new converts and covenant children.
