This paper was written for a meeting of the American Theological Society, and it is focused on the American context. But the issues it raises are of wider ecumenical interest. It makes a well‐reasoned plea to open up the ecumenical door to let the evangelicals in, and concludes that there is much at stake in such a move for life on both sides of the door. Apart from this, the section on the ordination of women and the part played by the Holiness churches in it (pp. 105–108) should be of special interest to readers of this issue of the Review.
