This article reports the results of a survey, conducted in fall 2009 on behalf of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), to explore German teachers’ perceptions regarding their preparation in the area of culture teaching, what components they considered essential in developing cultural understanding in their students, and what materials they found useful in developing cultural literacy in the German classroom. A two‐part questionnaire, soliciting quantitative as well as qualitative data, was distributed electronically to 2500 AATG members. The response rate was 31%, including 469 respondents from the pre‐collegiate levels and 277 respondents from the post‐secondary level.
