As a contribution toward envisioning how translingual and transcultural competence may be realized in the foreign language classroom, this article shows that German Kabarett serves as especially suitable material for facilitating students’ awareness of language as a tool with which to access culture and as an integral aspect of culture itself. I discuss materials, methods and outcomes of my course “Flashy Erotics to Forbidden Laughter: German Kabarett through the 20 th Century,” unfolding the ways that Kabarett speaks to a vast array of cultural discourses, engaging the language‐culture nexus on the textual and performative levels.
