This article argues that, in order to flourish, German Studies must come to see language as a social semiotic resource that construes a cultural world. Pivotal for this understanding is an expanded notion of lexico grammar as the central meaning‐making dynamic for oral and written texts. This paper presents key aspects of such a textually and meaning‐oriented notion of grammar and suggests how it might inform the integrated teaching and learning of culture and language.
