New data on the taxonomy and distribution of Platanthera species in China are discussed. Two new species, Platanthera ovatilabris and P. dulongensis , are described and illustrated. Platanthera ophiocephala is recorded for the first time in China (Yunnan). Platanthera dyeriana in the ‘Flora of China’ was misidentified as P. sikkimensis , although P. dyeriana is easily distinguishable by reduced leaves 1.5–3.0(4.0) cm long, lower bracts not exceeding the flowers, smaller flowers with sepals 4.5–6.5 mm long and lip ca 8 mm long. True P. sikkimensis is reported from China (Tibet) for the first time. All new localities are mapped. The descriptions of all taxa are accompanied by information on the species’ affinities, geographical distribution and implications for their conservation. Platanthera ovatilabris, P. dulongensis and P. ophiocephala are known from 1–3 localities and are assessed as ‘Critically Endangered’, being threatened by depletion of their habitat (primary forests).
