Stylogyne laxiflora Mez is transferred to the genus Ardisia Sw. (Myrsinaceae) as Ardisia spruceana (Mez) Carrijo, M. F. Freitas & A. L. Peixoto due to its bisexual flowers, filaments fused by staminal tube, long style and punctiform stigma. A lectotype for this name is designated. The species is illustrated here for the first time, and a new description is provided. Comments regarding its geographic distribution are presented.
