Phylloscirpus acaulis and Trichophorum rigidum (Cyperaceae) are widely distributed in the Andes of South America. A study of the taxonomy, vegetative architecture and inflorescence structure showed the existence of two subspecies, Phylloscirpus acaulis subsp. pachycaulis and Trichophorum rigidum subsp. ecuadoriense.
