In tropical Africa annual and short‐lived perennial taxa of Parietaria occur. Three of them, which are not member of the Parietaria debilis group, have been studied in detail in this paper. P. laxiflora, P. ruwenzoriensis ssp. ruwenzoriensis and P. ruwenzoriensis ssp. keniensis are described, illustrated and mapped. P. ruwenzoriensis ssp. keniensis is described as a new taxon. Of the three perennial species, that have been described ( P. scandens, P. laxiflora, P. ruwenzoriensis), P. laxiflora and P. ruwenzoriensis are accepted, and P. scandens is a synonym of P. ruwenzoriensis . The sex distribution of the flowers is an important character for delimitating the taxa in Africa, which has been disregarded in earlier treatment. In the past all tropical African taxa were often lumped together with the annual P. debilis .
