The genus Schismatomma is monographed. Schismatomma is distributed in mainly temperate regions of North America, Europe, Eastern Russia, Japan and New Zealand. Eight fructiferous species are recognized out of approximately 120 taxa which have been referred to as Schismatomma . No sterile species are recognized. A new combination, Schismatomma ocellulatum is made. Key, descriptions and distribution maps are supplied. A phylogeny based on cladistic parsimony methods using morphological data is proposed and discussed.
